INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Alvaro Gutierrez won in both singles and doubles on Friday afternoon, but Oral Roberts University fell to IUPUI, 6-1, in Summit League men’s tennis action.
ORU is now 1-8 (0-1 Summit League).
The victories by Gutierrez are the first of the year for ORU against NCAA Division I competition. He teamed with Parker Allen to take his top flight doubles match over Luke Bielawski and Patrick O’Niell, 8-7 (7-5) and he topped Nick Volz at No. 1 singles, 1-6, 6-4, 8-6.
ORU lost the doubles point despite the top court win. Matthew Prevost and Nathaniel Avery were stopped at No. 2 pairs, 8-3, by Thomas Gans and Deon Shafer. The Jaguars (6-10, 1-0 Summit League) secured the doubles point when ORU was unable to produce a third team.
IUPUI swept the singles courts below Gutierrez. Chase Emerson beat Allen on the second court, 6-2, 6-3, and Ivan Mojsejev knocked off Oscar Witzand at No. 3 by a 6-3, 6-2 count.
Shafer scored a 6-2, 6-2 win over Avery in No. 4 singles, and Joel Modesitt topped Prevost on the fifth court, 6-0, 6-2.
IUPUI also took the final singles court by default.
The Golden Eagles return to the court on Saturday, March 24, when they host Creighton.
