TULSA, Okla. - Oral Roberts University earned their first men’s tennis victory of 2012 on Wednesday night, a 4-3 victory over Oklahoma Baptist University at the Case Tennis Complex.
ORU is now 1-5 on the season, while the Bison fall to 0-6.
The Golden Eagles were led by a pair of players who won two matches each. Alvaro Gutierrez and Oscar Witzand each took home crucial points in singles and doubles play to spearhead the team to victory.
Witzand and Gutierrez combined to win the top flight in doubles, an 8-3 triumph over OBU’s Marco Carvajal and Augusta Jenssen. Parker Allen and Oscar Witzand lost, 8-3, to Francisco Da Silva and Dario Macanovic on the second court.
ORU was unable to field a third pairing, conceding the doubles point to OBU.
Gutierrez bested Carvajal in top court singles, 6-2, 6-4, and Allen put the Golden Eagles on the right track with a 4-6, 6-1, 6-0 comeback win over Macanovic at the No. 2 spot.
The wins set the stage for Witzand to clinch the match with a 7-5, 6-0 victory over Da Silva.
On the fourth court, Avery rallied over Jenssen, 5-7, 6-4, 10-6.
OBU won two points at singles. Kolt Bylerly outlasted Matthew Prevost, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1. The Bison also won the sixth court by default.
Flush with momentum, ORU will look for the second win in a row on Saturday, Feb. 25, when they take on Wichita State at high noon.
