ORU Opens Summit Play with 5-2 Win over IPFW
Junior Tori Dollar again led ORU (4-5, 1-0 Summit League) to the victory with wins in both singles and doubles. The reigning Summit League Player of the Week teamed with Marizanne Bouwer to score an 8-2 decision over Raquel Vescovi and Frederique Sunstrum at No. 3 doubles. At the No. 6 singles spot, Dollar bested Alex Forsyth, 6-3, 4-6, 6-0.
The two victories run Dollar’s personal winning streak to seven matches.
But Dollar was far from alone in the winning effort. After Lina Semenova and Haley Martin fell at No. 1 singles, 8-5, to Caterina Kiefer and Marcy Huck, the doubles point was up for grabs. But Iryna Khatsko and Kristin Gray earned a hard-fought triumph at No. 2 with an 8-6 decision over Forsyth and Anita Henestrosa, giving the Golden Eagles a 1-0 lead.
Khatsko took a point for ORU at top-flight singles, 6-1, 6-4, over Henestrosa, but Semenova fell at the second court to Huck, 3-6, 7-5, 11-9.
The Mastodons also earned the point at No. 3, with Vescovi taking down Martin, 6-4, 6-2.
But ORU’s depth was the difference, as Chris Milliron’s team took the final three points. Gray topped Kiefer on the fourth court, 6-3, 6-2 and Bouwer drilled Sunstrum, 6-1, 6-2 for a fifth-flight win.
Dollar capped the victory with her point at the sixth spot.
ORU will continue Summit League play on Friday with two more matches in Ft. Wayne. The Golden Eagles will face UMKC at 8 am, while a second match against South Dakota is tentatively slated for 7 pm.
