ORU Draws Southern Utah in Summit Semifinals
The winner of Friday’s match will face either No. 2 IPFW or No. 3 UMKC on Saturday in the championship match.
The Golden Eagles (11-5, 8-0 Summit League) earned the No. 1 seed in the tournament by virtue of their undefeated Summit League regular season campaign. Chris Milliron’s team swept five-team pods at Summit League cluster events in Fort Wayne in March and Indianapolis earlier this month.
Included in the undefeated conference journey was a 4-0 shutout of Southern Utah (9-9, 5-3 Summit League) on April 14 in Indianapolis. Iryna Khatsko teamed with Kristin Gray to earn a doubles victory in the win over the Thunderbirds, and both Khatsko and Marizanne Bouwer won singles points before the match was called.
SUU defaulted on two courts after starting the match with only five players.
Khatsko, who posted an 8-0 singles record and a 7-0 doubles record in Summit League play, is a prime candidate for the Summit League’s Player of the Year award, which will be announced later this week. Bouwer and Tori Dollar, both of whom went unbeaten in Summit League singles matches, should also hear their names called for All-League selection, along with several other Golden Eagles.
ORU edged IPFW on March 29 in Fort Wayne, 5-2, and they took down UMKC one day later, 4-0. ORU’s victory over IPFW was the Mastodons’ first loss to a Summit League opponent since the 2009 title match, when they were also beaten by the Golden Eagles.
That 2009 conference title trophy was the last one captured by ORU. The Golden Eagles also won the Summit League Championship in 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2007 and 2008.
Saturday’s championship match begins at 10 am CT.
