ORU Concludes Fall Season at Bearkat Invitational
Haley Martin competed in the A Flight at the event, where she lost her opener to SHSU’s Maddie Mortimore, 6-2, 6-1. Martin then got a bye into the consolation final, where she was beaten by UTPA’s Mariana Ranzahuer, 6-4, 6-0.
Melanie Marlin also played in the A Flight and had to retire from her opening match, against DiDi Fatchikova of UPTA.
ORU’s top performer at the event was Marizanne Bouwer, who won the B Flight singles competition. Bouwer beat UTPA’s Christel Amsallem after Amsallem was forced to retire due to injury. Bouwer then knocked off Kayla Stevenson of SHSU in the semifinals, 6-4, 6-0, and took down Natalie Petaia of SHSU in the finals, 6-0, 7-6 (7-3).
Mairead Cleary also took part in the B flight, where she fell to Bailey VanDyke, an unattached player, 7-6 (7-3), 6-0. Cleary then got a bye to the consolation finals, where she lost a thriller to Reegan Greenwood of UTPA, 6-0, 4-6, 14-12.
In Flight C, Nika Munoz was beaten by Heather Borsos of UTPA in the final, 6-0, 6-3. Munoz lost in the consolations finals to Julia Perez of UTPA, 7-5, 4-6, 10-3.
In doubles play, Martin and Bouwer received a bye to the 2nd round, where they beat UTPA’s Ranzahuer and Greenwood, 8-4. The ORU duo then lost to SHSU’s Petaia and Olivia Battye, 8-6, but they came back to beat Vandyke and Mortimore, 8-3, for 3rd place.
Munoz and Cleary also got a bye to the 2nd round, where they were swept by Vandyke and Mortimore, 8-0. The Golden Eagle pair to reverted to the consolation bracket, where they fell to UTPA’s Wanda Beguelin and Stanislava Stachova, 8-2.
Marlin teamed the Natalia Dollar for ORU’s final pair. The duo topped UTPA’s Borsos and Perez in the 1st round, 8-2, but fell to SHSU’s Imke Jagau and Stevenson, 8-5, in the 2nd round. Because of the loss, Marlin and Dollar played Borsos and Perez again in the consolation bracket and won against, 8-3. But with Marlin injured, Cleary teamed with Dollar in the consolation final, an 8-4 loss to UTPA’s Ranzahuer and Greenwood.
ORU opens their spring championship season on January 18, 2014, when they take on Tulsa.
