This is the seventh of 15 editions of the Top Moments from 2012-13 as selected by the ORU Media Relations Department and a social media poll.
TULSA, Okla. – With momentum from seven wins in the last nine matches of the season, the Oral Roberts University volleyball team felt good going into the Southland Conference Tournament, but would have to play at its best to avoid an early exit.
To say they played well might be an understatement as Coach Sheera Sirola’s squad dominated No. 3 seeded Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in a 3-0 sweep in the opening round. With scores of 25-20, 25-16 and 25-18, the Golden Eagles rolled into the second round, where the regular season co-champions from Sam Houston State awaited.
Again ORU made quick work of its opponent with a 3-0 sweep (25-19, 25-21, 25-18), proving just as dominant as the day before. The victory earned ORU a spot in the championship match on ESPN3, making them the lowest seed in Southland Conference history to play for the tournament championship.
In order to win the tournament, ORU would have to knock off the regular season champion UCA Sugar Bears on their home court, which would have completed the clean sweep of the top three seeds.
It was not in the cards, and the 30-win club from UCA knocked out ORU 3-1 in the final match. Bruna Silva, who was the Southland Conference Libero of the Year, and Sheina Fernandes each earned spots on the All-Tournament team.
