FRISCO, Texas - Oral Roberts University senior Sheina Fernandes has been selected to receive the Southland Conference’s F.L. McDonald Postgraduate Scholarship, the league office announced today. Fernandes will be honored during the Southland Honors Ceremony on May 21 at the Gaylord Texan Resort in Grapevine, Texas.

In addition to Fernandes, the Southland Conference also honored Stephen F. Austin volleyball student-athlete Sabrina Burns and Southeastern Louisiana baseball student-athlete Brandon Bernard with McDonald Scholarships.

The McDonald Scholarship is the league’s ultimate academic honor for its top graduates. The award is presented annually to graduating male and female letterwinners with the highest cumulative grade point averages during their enrollment at Southland Conference universities. The $2,500 scholarship must be applied to graduate study at an institution of the recipient’s choice.

Fernandes, a 1st Team All-Southland selection, posted a 4.00 grade-point average while majoring in international business. She plans to pursue a master’s degree in banking.

The Porto Alegre, Brazil native was tabbed as a Capital One Academic All-American as a senior while claiming a 1st Team spot on the Southland’s All-Academic team. Fernandes finished third in the SLC in hitting percentage and blocks per set during the 2012 campaign.

Fernandes helped the Golden Eagles reach the finals of the Southland Conference Tournament when sixth-seeded ORU became the lowest seed to reach the championship game in tournament history.

ORU opens the 2013 volleyball season on Friday, August 30.
