Tulsa-Oakland held off a hard-hitting ORU team Friday night, escaping the Cooper Aerobics Center with a narrow 3-1 (25-20, 25-23, 13-25, 25-23) victory in Summit League action.
The Golden Eagles were paced by senior middle blocker, Jocelyn Swier, who erupted for 11 kills and four assisted blocks, while hitting an incredible .409 in the loss.
Oakland jumped out to a 17-11 advantage midway through game one, and held off a late Golden Eagle rally to pull off the 25-20 decision. Game two was not nearly so comfortable for the visiting Grizzlies, as ORU managed to keep it close for the lion's share of the battle, before eventually knotting it up at 20 each on a kill by Cate. Following an Oakland timeout, the guests were able to squeak out a tough 5-3 run and hold on for their second win of the night.
ORU left nothing to chance coming out of intermission, using an early 8-0 run that all but put the contest on ice en-route to the 25-13 victory.
The Golden Eagles had the momentum and a rowdy fan section on their side in the crucial game four, battling the Grizzlies every step of the way and bringing the crowd to their feet with a Joana Gruber kill that evened the tally at 21 all. That would be the final highlight for the hosts however, as Oakland made every important play down the stretch to pull out the 25-23 victory.
ORU held a commanding 61-49 kills advantage, and out-hit the Grizzlies .235 to .186.
With the loss, ORU drops to 8-11 overall and 6-5 in Summit League play. The victory improves Oakland to an even 12-12 on the year and 6-5 in conference.
ORU is right back at it this Sunday, as they host the Mastodons of IPFW at 2:00 p.m. in the Aerobics Center.
