Brookings, SD—The Oral Roberts volleyball team dropped a tough five set decision (26-24, 25-20, 20-25, 19-25, 14-16) to the South Dakota State Jackrabbits Thursday evening in a crucial Summit League bout at Frost Arena.
Tied with SDSU for the fourth and final spot in the Summit League postseason race, ORU quickly jumped ahead with 26-24 and 25-20 victories in the opening two games.
Coming out of intermission, the host Jacks managed to turn the tables on the Golden Eagles, claiming the next two sets 25-20 and 25-19 to set up the final game-five showdown.
Despite five ties, ORU never managed to pull ahead in the final set. All knotted up at seven each, the host Jacks rattled off four in a row to pull ahead 11-7. ORU countered with a 6-2 run of their own to tie things up once again at 13. SDSU kept battling however, and eventually forged a narrow 15-14 advantage, before Kaitlin Klingemann converted her 11th kill of the contest to put the game on ice.
Olivia Ophus was one of two Golden Eagles to log a double-double, finishing with 15 kills and 13 digs, while tallying three assisted blocks and an ace in the setback.
Anna Rossi rounded out the double-double duo, pouring in 42 assists and 11 digs.
The loss drops ORU to 12-13 overall and 10-7 in conference. With the victory, SDSU improves to 15-13 overall and 11-6 in Summit play. The Jacks now stand in a three-way tie with Oakland and Southern Utah for third place in the conference standings.
ORU wraps up regular season action this Saturday as they head to Fargo, North Dakota, to battle North Dakota State at 7:00 p.m.
