TULSA, Okla. - The Oral Roberts University volleyball team continues their Summit League road trip this weekend when they face UMKC on Friday at 5:30 pm and South Dakota on Sunday at 2 pm. The matches are the final two legs of ORU’s four-match swing away from Tulsa.
The first two stops on the road trip could not have gone much better for Sheera Sirola’s team. Last Friday in Brookings, S.D., the Golden Eagles (15-4, 8-1 Summit League) topped South Dakota State, 3-2, behind a career-high 20 kills from Elizabeth McVicker and 38 digs by Bruna Silva.
The victory meant that Saturday’s match against North Dakota State in Fargo, N.D., would be for first place in the Summit League standings midway through the League schedule. ORU lost two of the first three sets to NDSU and faced a match point in the fourth, but the Golden Eagles rallied for a five-set win.
Silva had a career-high 41 digs in the victory and earned her third career Summit League Defensive Player of the Week award for her performance.
The victory snapped an eight-match losing streak to the Bison and gave ORU their eighth straight victory overall. The Golden Eagles have also won 15 of their last 16 matches.
Now one game ahead of NDSU at the top of the Summit League race, the Golden Eagles must turn their attention to last place UMKC. The Kangaroos (6-13, 0-9 Summit League) have lost six straight matches, including a 3-1 setback against IPFW last Saturday. Emily Lucas led the ‘Roos with 16 kills in defeat.
ORU is 40-4 all-time against the ‘Roos, including a resounding three-game sweep on Sept. 17. McVicker and Olivia Ophus each had nine kills to pace the Eagles, while Silva had 27 digs, a career-high for a three-set contest.
South Dakota (10-10, 5-4 Summit League) handed ORU their lone set back of the Summit League schedule so far, a 3-2 win on Sept. 15. Freshman Kendall Kritenbrink led the Coyotes with 34 kills in that match, and she added a team-high 15 on Tuesday night as USD turned away future Summit member Nebraska-Omaha, 3-0.
Junior Sheina Fernandes led ORU in the loss with 13 kills. The match was the first ever between the two schools.
Following the road trip, the Golden Eagles return to Tulsa for an Oct. 20 fixture against Western Illinois. First serve is scheduled for a 7 pm.
