The Golden Eagles (17-4, 10-1 Summit League) are flying sky high after a pair of weekend victories at UMKC and South Dakota stretched their winning streak to ten matches. The streak is the longest for ORU since their 2006 Mid-Continent Conference championship season.
ORU is now 9-1 on the road this season and 7-1 in five-set matches. The team’s nine road victories are the most of any NCAA Division I team.
At 10-1 in Summit League play, ORU is still one full match ahead of North Dakota State at the top of the League standings.
Earlier this week, Sheera Sirola’s team was ranked 70th in the first NCAA Division I RPI rankings of the 2011 season. ORU’s .810 winning percentage is the 19th-best mark in the nation.
Thursday’s match will be the first for ORU in the Cooper Aerobics Center since Oct. 1, when they defeated Oakland. The Golden Eagles are 4-1 at home this season.
ORU already owns a win over Western Illinois (10-11, 3-8 Summit League), which has lost four of their last five matches, including a 3-0 sweep at the hands of North Dakota State on Oct. 15. Cait Egan had a team-high eight kills in the loss.
The Golden Eagles swept Western Illinois earlier this season, on Sept. 24. Joana Gruber led ORU with 14 kills, while Bruna Silva added 25 digs.
With the victory, ORU improved to 28-5 all-time against the Leathernecks, with seven straight victories.
Following Thursday’s match, ORU will take a day off before hosting IUPUI on Saturday. First serve is again scheduled for 7 pm.
