ORU (4-3) split a four-match series at the University Plaza Invitational over the weekend. The Golden Eagles opened the tournament with a five-set loss to host Missouri State on Thursday before rallying to win a five-setter over UALR on Friday. The Golden Eagles took a 3-0 decision over Austin Peay on Saturday before ending the day with a 3-0 loss to No. 11 Dayton.
Senior Tatum Fredeen has led the ORU attack through seven matches, collecting an impressive 3.22 kills per set. Defensively, a pair of juniors has stood out, with libero Bruna Silva averaging 5.14 digs per set and Jessica Pancratz averaging 1.36 blocks per set.
Tulsa advanced to the second round of the 2011 NCAA Tournament and is also 4-3 after winning two of three matches in Lawrence, Kan., over the weekend. The Golden Hurricane swept Arkansas State and Nebraska-Omaha at the event but fell to host Kansas, 3-1.
Senior Tyler Henderson leads TU with a whopping 5.67 kills per set, while Jessica Adams posts a 5.42 digs per set average.
Senior Diana Silva, sister of ORU’s Bruna Silva, averages 2.58 kills and 3.75 digs per set for the Golden Hurricane.
ORU has played Tulsa more than any other opponent and is 57-25 all-time against the Golden Hurricane, but Tulsa has won four straight meetings with Sheera Sirola’s team. The squads last met on October 13, 2010, a 3-0 sweep. Fredeen led the Golden Eagles with 10 kills in the loss, while Silva had 13 digs.
Tuesday is ORU’s final chance to beat a 2011 NCAA Tournament qualifier before the regular season is complete. The Golden Eagles are 0-2 against 2011 postseason teams after losing to Missouri State and Dayton last season, and they do not have another NCAA Tournament qualifier on the 2012 schedule.
Following Tuesday’s match, ORU heads to Denton, Texas for their final regular season tournament of the year, the Mean Green Invitational. Play begins on Friday afternoon against the tournament hosts from North Texas.
