Oral Roberts (9-2, 1-0 Southland Conference) opened their home and league schedules in fine fashion on Thursday night with a 3-0 sweep of conference newcomer Incarnate Word. Freshman McKenna Qualls had a double-double in her collegiate home debut, with 12 kills and 12 digs, while junior transfer Sara Pope had 10 kills in her first match in the Aerobics Center.
A trio of seniors was key to the victory as well. Bruna Silva led the defensive charge with 17 digs, while Laura Taylor fell just short of a double-double with eight digs and 35 assists. Jessica Pancratz, meanwhile, set a career high with four service aces.
Through 11 matches, Pope leads the Golden Eagles and ranks 3rd in the SLC with 3.60 kills per set, while Silva leads ORU and ranks 3rd in the league with 4.89 digs per set.
Abilene Christian (4-5, 0-1 Southland Conference) fell to Central Arkansas, 3-0, on Thursday night in their first ever match as SLC members. Jennifer Loerch led the Wildcats with 10 kills, and Madison Hoover had a team-best 10 digs.
ACU is in their first season of NCAA Division I and Southland Conference membership. As transitional DI members, they are not eligible for the SLC or NCAA Tournaments.
The Wildcats hold a 4-2-1 edge over ORU in seven previous meetings, although the teams haven’t faced off since 1992. ORU’s last victory over Abilene came on September 22, 1986 in Tulsa.
Abilene Christian is one of only two teams to have recorded an official tie with the ORU volleyball program. The squads split two sets on October 5, 1979 as part of the OSU Invitational in Stillwater and did not play a tiebreaking 3rd set.
ORU Head Coach Sheera Sirola is 196-128 in her 11th season leading the Golden Eagle program. ACU Head Coach Kellen Mock is 152-84 in her eight seasons in charge of the Wildcats.
The Golden Eagles return to the road following Saturday’s matchup with ACU. Oral Roberts will face a third consecutive SLC newcomer, New Orleans, on Thursday, September 26 in the Big Easy. First serve is on the books for 7 pm CT.
