ORU Faces McNeese in Weekend Finale
ORU (14-4, 6-2 SLC) dispatched of Nicholls State on Thursday night, 3-0, behind an 18-kill night from junior Sara Pope. The Golden Eagles hit .385 as a team and earned their 12th sweep of the season, the most for an ORU team since raking in 14 sweeps during the 2008 season.
Luara Rosa added nine kills in Thursday’s win, while Bruna Silva keyed the defensive charge with 14 digs.
ORU is now 5-0 all-time against Nicholls State and has won 19 of their last 20 matches in the state of Louisiana.
Senior Jessica Pancratz continued to climb the ORU record books on Thursday night. He six-block performance gives her 318 total blocks for her career, which moves the Tulsa native into the 6th spot in ORU’s career record book.
All four of the teams ahead of ORU in the Southland Conference standings won on Thursday night, so the Golden Eagles remain in 5th place, behind Central Arkansas (8-0), Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (9-1), Sam Houston State (8-1) and Northwestern State (7-1).
McNeese State (12-11, 5-5 SLC) opened their conference season on fire, winning five of their first seve matches, but they have recently fallen on hard times with three straight losses. The Cowgirls were swept at home by Central Arkansas on Thursday night and are now 7th in the SLC standings.
Malina Sanchez led McNeese with nine kills in the loss to UCA, but the Cowgirls were overwhelmed by a Bears offense that finished with a .336 hitting percentage. Kimberlyn Patterson paced the McNeese back line with nine digs.
ORU is 3-0 all-time against McNeese State, with a five-set victory in 2011 and two 3-0 wins last season. The Golden Eagles last played McNeese on November 1, 2012, a sweep in Lake Charles. ORU hit .316 as a team in the rout, with Sadie Schaffner smacking 12 kills.
The Golden Eagles return home on Thursday, October 24 to host Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Match time at the Kenneth H. Cooper Aerobics Center is scheduled for 7 pm CT.
