Golden Eagles Tangle with Houston Baptist
The Golden Eagles (16-4, 8-2 Southland Conference) staged a miraculous comeback on Thursday night, a 3-2 victory over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. ORU lost the first two sets and trailed the 4th period, 16-6, before ending the match on a 34-9 run.
Sara Pope pounded a season-high 20 kills in the victory, while Bruna Silva added a match-high 27 digs.
Heroic individual efforts were easy to find on Thursday night, including senior Laura Taylor, who achieved a double-double with 12 digs and 47 assists. Sophomore Jovana Poljasevic had a career-high eight blocks, and Sthephanie Mab’s 11 digs were key to the defensive effort.
The victory vaulted ORU past the Islanders in the Southland Conference standings, though the Golden Eagles still trail Central Arkansas (10-0), Sam Houston State (10-1) and Northwestern State (9-1) heading into Saturday’s set of fixtures.
Houston Baptist (10-13, 5-6 Southland Conference) has been a tough out in their first year as Southland members, including a 3-1 loss to undefeated Central Arkansas on Thursday night. The Huskies were led by Preseason All-SLC pick Caiti Wenger, who notched 17 kills in the setback.
ORU is 2-0 all-time against Houston Baptist, with a 3-1 victory on October 16, 2008 at the Aerobics Center. Janete Ferreira led ORU with 14 kills in the win.
ORU's other victory over the Huskies came on September 11, 1987, a 3-0 sweep in Waco, Texas.
HBU Head Coach Trent Herman led Houston Baptist to a 20-win season and the Great West Conference championship in 2012 and is 30-23 in his second season with the program.
ORU's Sheera Sirola is 203-130 in her 11th season with the Golden Eagles.
Following Saturday's match, Oral Roberts has just two days off before heading to Natchitoches, La., to face Northwestern State. First serve on Tuesday, October 29 is scheduled for 7 pm CT.
