Pope Named SLC Newcomer of the Year

FRISCO, Texas - Oral Roberts University junior Sara Pope was named Southland Conference Volleyball Newcomer of the Year, the league announced on Wednesday afternoon, while seniors Bruna Silva and Jessica Pancratz joined Pope on the All-Southland Conference Team. Pope is the first ever Golden Eagle to win the Southland’s Newcomer of the Year honor.

Pope leads ORU and ranks 3rd in the Southland Conference with 3.68 kills per set, and her .297 hitting percentage ranks 6th in the league. The transfer from Albany has led ORU in kills 20 times this season, and she has posted three double-doubles in her last six appearances.

A junior, Pope was the 2012 America East Player of the Year after leading Albany to a conference championship. She is the third major award-winner for ORU in the last three seasons.

Silva is a 1st Team selection for the third consecutive year. The Rio de Janeiro, Brazil native leads the Golden Eagles and ranks 2nd in the Southland with 5.16 digs per set. The senior was the 2011 Summit League Defensive Player of the Year and the 2012 Southland Libero of the Year.

This is the first All-Southland honor for Pancratz, who was a 2nd Team selection. The Tulsa native leads the conference with a .333 hitting percentage, and her 1.04 blocks per set mark is the 5th-highest in the league.

ORU currently sports a 22-6 record in and begins Southland Conference Tournament play on Friday against Houston Baptist. First serve in Corpus Christi, Texas is scheduled for 1:30 pm CT.
