CEDAR CITY, Utah - Oral Roberts (17-17, 4-3 Summit) split a doubleheader with Southern Utah on Friday at Thunderbird Park with an 8-4 win in game one and a 6-0 loss in game two.
Jose Trevino led the Golden Eagles to victory in game one, batting 2-5 with a triple, double, two runs, and three RBI.
In game two, the Golden Eagles were shutout by a Summit League opponent for the second time this season and just the fourth time in the nine year tenure of Rob Walton.
Southern Utah (10-24, 4-3) ended a three game skid and will try for the series split against ORU tomorrow at 2 p.m. The T-Birds were led by Mitchell Kauweloa who recorded three RBI on the day.
Game 1: ORU 8, Southern Utah 4
ORU wasted no time taking the lead in game one. Jose Trevino tripled to right center field, scoring Cam Schiller and Kevin Cho, followed by a Brandon Healy single to plate Trevino and give ORU a 3-0 lead in the first.
The game would go back and forth for the next four innings, as Southern Utah would get two runs back in the second off a throwing error by Schiller with the bases loaded. The Golden Eagles responded by extended the lead once again in the third inning, 4-2, after another Healy single scored Trevino.
The ORU lead was short-lived as the T-birds answered right back with two more runs in the fourth to tie the game, 4-4, after two errors by ORU. The offensive spurt by Southern Utah would end Gonzalez's day, as Joe Spring came on in relief.
Spring (2-1) pitched brilliantly, earning his second consecutive win in a relief appearance after throwing six innings and allowing four hits with seven strikeouts.
The Golden Eagles would blow the game open in the fourth by scoring three runs. Logan Domenico walked to start the inning, followed by a Kevin Cho reaching base safely after an error by Cuthbertson. Schiller singled up the middle, and Trevino drove in his third run of the game with a groundout to score Domenico. Jared Schlehuber's two-Run single that followed would give ORU a 7-4 lead heading into the fifth inning.
Two straight hit-batters and three straight wild pitches would score Bennett Pickar and cap off the ORU victory in game one.
Game 2: Southern Utah 6, ORU 0 (7 innings)
Justin Neubaur (4-3) avoided the sweep by pitching seven shutout innings with two walks and two strikeouts. Kauweloa (2-4, 2 RBI) and Justin Neuhart (3-4, 1 RBI) led the T-Birds at the plate in support of Neubaur.
Mike Torrence (2-5) pitched 2.2 innings, allowing four hits and four runs.
Domenico recorded just one hit in the doubleheader, but it was that lone hit that broke up the no-hitter by Neubaur, which would have been a first by an ORU opponent since 1969.
The series concludes Saturday with game four starting at 2 p.m.
