TULSA – The Oral Roberts University baseball team got complete games from Jerry Sullivan and Mark Serrano and pounded out a combined 33 hits to defeat South Dakota State by scores of 22-1 and 16-0 on Saturday. The Golden Eagles improved to 16-9 overall and 7-0 in Summit League play.

Senior Juan Martinez went 4-for-6 with eight RBI in the opening game while junior right-hander Jerry Sullivan threw a complete game and struck out a career-high 16 batters.

The Golden Eagles scored the first run of the contest in the second inning when Johnny Roberts (Pryor, Okla.) reached on an error and Danny Duffy (Glendale, Ariz.) slapped a single to right center to plate the runner.

ORU scored nine runs in the bottom of the fourth, with eight coming with two outs. PJ Sequeira (Petaluma, Calif.) drew a walk and scored on a wild pitch. With two outs, Duffy doubled down the left field line and Colby Price (Brenham, Texas) singled up the middle to score the runner.

After a double steal, Seth Furmanek (Gilbert, Ariz.) scored two with a double to right field. Michael Notaro pushed the lead to 8-0 with a single through the right side and Roberts drove in two more runs with a double down the right field line.

ORU put another five runs on the board in the following inning, four of which came on a Martinez grand slam. The ORU senior followed the next inning with a two-run shot to right field.

Sullivan (Lake Budd, N.J.) earned his fourth win of the season by giving up one run on seven hits for his second career complete game. Sullivan surpassed his previous career high of 12 strikeouts set in last season’s Summit League championship game.

The Golden Eagles’ bats stayed hot for game two as ORU scored five runs in the opening inning. Garewal led off with an infield hit and later scored on an error. Furmanek, who drew a walk, also scored on an error before Roberts crushed a three-run homer over the left field foul pole.

Furmanek opened the third inning with his ninth homer of the season to right center, while Colby Price hit his first career long ball to left field in the fourth inning.

The Golden Eagles plated seven runs in the bottom of the fifth, highlighted by doubles by Duffy and Roberts, to take a commanding 14-0 lead.

ORU rounded out the scoring in the home half of the sixth when Martinez hit a single for his 11th RBI of the doubleheader and Brett Burch (Midland, Mich.) smacked a single through the left side to score a run.

Senior Mark Serrano pitched a masterful seven innings, surrendering two hits and no runs with eight strikeouts and one walk to remain undefeated on the season at 6-0.
