SOUTH YARMOUTH, Mass. - Oral Roberts University pitchers Drew Bowen and Alex Gonzalez return to campus this week after leading their summer team, the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox, to the final series of the 2012 Cape Cod Baseball League. Bowen, Gonzalez and the Red Sox lost to Warham, two games to one, in the best-of-three CCBL Championship Series.

Yarmouth-Dennis lost the opener of the three-game series, 5-4, on August 15 before rallying to win game two, 5-1. The Red Sox fell in the final game, 8-6, on August 17.

Gonzalez started the final game of the series and put up a tremendous performance, throwing six innings and striking out 11 batters. The rising junior left with the game tied, 2-2.

Bowen pitched in five regular season games for Yarmouth-Dennis, recording nine strikeouts in 14.1 innings with a 3.21 ERA. Gonzalez was 3-2 with a 5.28 ERA in seven regular season appearances, including six starts.

Both players were fantastic in Yarmouth-Dennis’ postseason run. Bowen was 1-0 in six shutout innings with eight strikeouts, while Gonzalez was 1-0 with a 1.42 ERA in 12.2 innings of work. He fanned 19 batters in postseason play.

Bowen’s strong summer followed up a 2012 collegiate season that saw him earn Summit League Pitcher of the Year honors. The rising senior was 7-2 with a 1.95 ERA in 14 appearances, including an NCAA Regional victory over No. 4 Baylor.

Gonzalez earned Summit League Pitcher of the Year honors in 2011, and he followed that up with a strong 2012 campaign. The Boca Raton, Fla., native was 6-3 last year with a 2.30 ERA in 17 games.

Bowen and Gonzalez weren’t the only ORU baseball players to compete for a championship on the summer circuit.  Incoming junior Audie Afenir led the Mankato MoonDogs to the championship series of the Northwoods League, where they fell, two games to one, to the La Crosse Loggers.

Afenir, a transfer from Palomar Community College, batted .352 for the MoonDogs in regular season play, with five doubles and nine RBI. In the postseason, Afenir hit .238 with a home run and three RBI.

ORU finished 38-25 in the recently-completed 2012 season. The Golden Eagles captured their 15th consecutive Summit League title and defeated No. 4 Baylor as part of a three-game run in the NCAA Division I Baseball Championship’s Waco Regional.
