FRISCO, Texas – Coming off his first complete game of the season, junior ace Alex Gonzalez has been named the Southland Conference pitcher of the week, league offices announced on Monday.
A native of Delray Beach, Fla., Gonzalez completed all nine innings at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, en route to his third victory of the season. Gonzalez struck out eight batters in the Golden Eagle victory, 8-2, with just one of the runs earned and allowed just one walk.
Gonzalez currently leads the conference with a 1.82 earned run average and has struck out a conference high 58 batters, eight away from his season total of 66 in 2012, and has pitched 54.1 innings, also a conference high.
Entering his start against the Islanders last Thursday, Gonzalez was sitting at 50 strikeouts, tied for 12th among Div. I pitchers. He is also five strikeouts away from reaching Mike Moore (229) for the ninth overall on the career strikeout list at ORU.
The Golden Eagles (9-18, 4-2) returns home on Tuesday night at 6:30 p.m. against Missouri State before travel south to Stephen F. Austin for a three-game set beginning on Friday.
