TULSA, Okla. – Throughout a baseball season that had its ups and downs, one thing was the same. The buzz surrounding Oral Roberts University junior right handed pitcher Alex Gonzalez was building steam with every start.
With tweets from Keith Law (ESPN), Kendall Rogers (Perfect Game) and others, and high-powered executives on hand to watch him in person, the idea that ORU could have a first round selection for the first time since 1987 quickly seemed to be a reality.
The Texas Rangers snagged Gonzalez with the 23rd overall pick, making Gonzalez the highest draft pick since Mike Moore went first overall in 1981.
“We are really excited for Alex,” said first year Head Coach Ryan Folmar after the draft. “He has worked so hard for us the past three years and is deserving of this opportunity. The Rangers are a great organization and we certainly wish him the best of luck.”
In 15 starts this season, the 2013 Southland Conference Pitcher of the Year struck out 126 batters, the third most in ORU history, and had seven or more strikeouts in 13 games. In the regular season finale, Gonzalez sat down a career best 13 Northwestern State batters.
Gonzalez was also named a second team Perfect Game All-American after his outstanding junior season.
