FORT WORTH, Texas-Drew Bowen tossed eight shutout innings and Oral Roberts took advantage of a porous Oklahoma defense as the Golden Eagles registered a 7-0 victory over the Sooners to stay alive in the Fort Worth Regional, Saturday at Lupton Stadium.
The Golden Eagles (37-21) next faces regional top seed and host TCU in another elimination game at 2 p.m. Sunday.
Bowen (6-2) was in control form the start, limiting Oklahoma to five singles among its six hits. He struck out just one batter, but induced the Sooners (41-19) into 16 fly ball outs. He retired the side in order just once - in the second - but never faced more than five batters in any inning and allowed only three base runners to reach scoring position over the first seven innings.
The Sooners, meanwhile, committed six errors, leading to three unearned runs for ORU.
Including his shutout effort against Western Illinois in the opening game of the Summit League Tournament, Bowen has tossed 17 consecutive scoreless innings during the 2011 post season.
Oklahoma threatened in the top of the first, getting two on with one out. But Cameron Seitzer lined into a double play to end the threat.
ORU took advantage of OU's missed opportunity in the bottom of the inning. Sooners starting pitcher Burch Smith (10-4) loaded the bases with one out and nearly got out of the inning when Nick Baligod was forced at home plate on Cam Schiller's short dribbler. But a two-run single by Jared Schlehuber and an RBI base hit by T.J. Bennett gave ORU a 3-0 lead.
The Golden Eagles added to their lead in the second thanks to a pair of OU errors and some timely hitting.
Bennett Pickar led off with a walk and OU catcher Tyler Ogle misfired on his throw to second after a bunt attempt by Joey Winiecki. Baligod's sacrifice bunt attempt rolled up the third base line for a single to load the bases.
Chris Elder followed Baligod with an RBI single to make it 4-0 and Brandon King knocked in a run when second baseman Cale Ellis mishandled a potential double play ball, giving ORU a 5-0 advantage. Two batters later Schlehuber drew a bases loaded walk to stretch the lead to 6-0.
That was all the run support Bowen needed. The sophomore right-hander worked around two-out, one-on jams in the third and fourth, and avoided any trouble after allowing a one out double to Ricky Eisenberg in the fifth.
In the bottom of the fifth ORU plated another unearned on two more Sooner errors, making it 7-0.
Bowen came out for the ninth, looking for ORU's first complete game shutout in Regionals since Nick Jones blanked College of Charleston in 2005. But Bowen was pulled after and single and walk, and Joe Spring came out of the bullpen to clean up and keep ORU alive.
Baligod led ORU with a 2-for-5 effort, knocking in one run. Schlehuber added three RBI in support of Bowen.
Chris Ellison had three hits for the Sooners.
