BEAUMONT, Texas – A two home run game by Jose Trevino helped the Oral Roberts University baseball team to a Southland Conference sweep over Lamar, with an 8-6 victory on Sunday.

The Golden Eagles swept an opponent on the road for the first time since doing so against IPFW in 2008. ORU’s record improves to 18-26 and 13-8 in conference play, and the Golden Eagles moved in front of the Cardinals (33-15, 12-9 Southland) who entered the weekend tied for first in the Southland Conference.

Freshman Guillermo Trujillo entered the game in the second inning and allowed just four hits in six scoreless innings, striking out five in the victory. It was Trujillo’s first victory of his ORU career.

Nathan Garza got the ball from Trujillo in the eighth, getting the last six outs for his third save of the season.

Trevino struck for the first time in top of the third with the Golden Eagles trailing 4-0, turning on a 2-0 pitch, lifting it over the foul pole for his sixth home run of the season. Two innings later, he gave the Golden Eagles a 6-4 lead with a line-drive shot that scored Matt Brandy and Logan Domenico.

Trevino’s multi-home run game is the first since Jared Schlehuber hit a pair against Western Illinois on April 21, 2012.

Trevino finished the contest with three hits, six runs batted in and scored twice. Brandy recorded three hits, scored twice and drove in a run in the top of the sixth expanding the ORU lead to 7-4.

Brandy also reached base in each of his at bats, adding a pair of walks as well.

The Cardinals jumped out to a 2-0 after the first inning as Sam Bumpers and Aaron Olivas each scored on groundouts. Lamar added two more runs in the home half of the second on three hits.

Down 4-0 after two innings, ORU rallied behind Trujillo, who sat down eight straight cardinals going into the seventh inning, scoring the next seven runs of the game to make it a 7-4 game in the eighth.

Lamar tried to rally in the bottom of the eighth, tallying two runs on four hits to climb to within a run of ORU with one inning to play.

The Golden Eagles added an insurance run in the top of the ninth as Tyler Boss sent the first pitch of the ninth over the wall for his second homer of the series. He finished Sunday’s contest with two hits.

Lance Warren took the loss for the Cardinals, pitching 4.2 innings, allowing six runs, three of which were earned, on seven hits.

ORU continues its five game road swing on Tuesday and Wednesday as they head to Springfield, Mo., for a pair of games against Missouri State.
