Golden Eagles Top Wichita State Again, 6-4
WICHITA, Kan.-Seth Furmanek and Colby Price each homered and knocked in two runs, and Chris Elder made a key defensive play as Oral Roberts continued its mastery of Wichita State with a 6-4 win, Tuesday at Eck Stadium. The victory is ORU's sixth straight against the Shockers and the 15th in the last 19 meetings.
The Shockers (29-17) opened the scoring in the bottom of the first, getting a run on a double play groundout. ORU (26-18) tied it up in the top of the second on a solo home run by Furmanek, his team-leading 15th of the season.
P.J. Sequeira gave ORU a 2-1 lead with an RBI double in the top of the fourth. Price connected for a two-run homer in the sixth, giving ORU a 4-1 lead.
Jameson Dunn, the fifth pitcher of the night for ORU, ran into trouble in the bottom of the sixth. After opening the frame with a strikeout, a batter reached on an error and Dunn surrendered a two-run homer to Preston Springer, cutting ORU's lead to 4-3.
Dunn then gave up a single, a bloop double and hit first baseman Johnny Coy to load the bases. Dunn struck out Ryan Jones for the second out, setting up Elder's play.
With two outs and the bases loaded, pinch-hitter Chris O'Brien drove the ball to deep left field. Elder, who pinch-hit in the top of the inning, caught the ball on a dead sprint a step before banging into the wall, preserving the lead for ORU.
The Golden Eagles got back the runs in the top of the seventh. Furmanek knocked in a run with a one-out single to make it 5-3, and Sequeira drove in Furmanek two batters later for a 6-3 ORU lead.
Sean Johnson allowed a two-out solo home run in the top of the ninth, but struck out Tyler Grimes to end the game and pick up his third save.
Jeff Burleson (7-2) earned the win with two shutout innings of relief.
Joey Winiecki led ORU's 11-hit attack, going 4-for-5 with a run scored. Furmanek and Sequeira finished with two hits. Sequeira joined Furmanek and Price with two RBI.
