MEMPHIS, Tenn.-Five different pitchers combined to hold Eastern Kentucky to one run on six hits in helping Oral Roberts to a 3-1 win at the Memphis Classic, Sunday at FedEx Park.
The win snapped a two-game losing streak for the Golden Eagles (4-5) as sophomore Alec Smith (1-1) picked up the win in relief.
ORU took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second. Brett Sowers reached on a two-out error and moved to second on passed ball. T.J. Bennett singled through the right side, scoring Sowers for the game's first run.
Bennett helped give ORU a 2-0 lead in the fifth. After leading off with a walk, Bennett moved to second on a sacrifice by Bennett Pickar and later advanced to third on a passed ball. Joey Winiecki knocked in Bennett with a single to left field.
The Colonels (3-7) got on the board in the top of the sixth when Sean Hagen plated a run with a fielder's choice to bring EKU within 2-1.
ORU scored an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Winiecki for a 3-1 advantage.
Right-hander Matt Rush pitched struck out a pair during a perfect ninth inning to preserve the victory and earn his first save of the year.
The Golden Eagles collected just four hits but took advantage of an error and three passed balls by the Colonels.
Sean Johnson pitched well in his first collegiate start. Usually ORU's closer, Johnson allowed three hits and three walks while striking out three in 4.2 innings. He was replaced by Smith, who tossed 1.1 hitless innings.
ORU returns to action when they open a three-game series against Bethune-Cookman, 6:30 p.m., Friday at J.L. Johnson Stadium.
