TEMPE, Ariz.-Ninth-ranked Arizona State received a complete game effort from Kramer Champlin inhanding Oral Roberts a 5-1 setback, Friday at Packard Stadium.

Champlin (3-0) scattered six hits while striking out eight batters with four walks to lead Arizona State (14-3) to victory.

Arizona State took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning, thanks in part to an ORU (7-6) error. With two outs and Austin Barnes at first, second baseman Spencer Barnett misplayed a base hit by Joey DeMichelle, allowing Barnes to reach third. Barnes later scored on a double by Andrew Alpin to give the Sun Devils the lead.

The Sun Devils broke the game open with a four-run fourth inning. Johnny Ruettiger laced a two-run single. Riccio Torrez knocked in a run with a single of his own and another run scored on an error by catcher Bennett Pickar as ASU went up 5-0.

ORU scored its only run in the ninth inning on an RBI groundout by T.J. Bennett for the final 5-1 margin.

Relievers Alec Smith and Joe Spring combined to keep the Sun Devils off the board over the final five innings, but it wasn't enough.

The Golden Eagles managed just six hits, with two apiece for Chris Elder and Cam Schiller

Freshman Alex Gonzalez (2-2) suffered the loss for ORU, allowing five runs on eight hits and four walks in three-plus innings.

The Golden Eagles and Sun Devils resume their series Saturday at 8:30 p.m. CDT.
