Golden Eagles Down IPFW in Series Finale, 7-2
After rain delayed the start of the game by more than three hours, the Golden Eagles (22-17, 11-5 Summit) wasted no time in getting on the board. Nick Baligod led off the first inning with a single and eventually scored on a two-out double by Chris Elder to give ORU a 1-0 lead.
King laced an RBI double in the third, scoring Baligod to make it 2-0.
IPFW got on the board in the third. A.J. Christensen greeted reliever Dan Martony with a single to center. Christensen moved to second on a wild pitch and scored two batters later on a single by Cody Galbraith to bring the Mastodons within 2-1.
The Golden Eagles padded their lead in the fifth. Chris Williams doubled with one out and Baligod was intentionally walked. After a sacrifice bunt by Joey Winiecki moved the runners up one base, King lined a single through the left side of the infield, scoring Williams and Baligod for a 4-1 advantage.
ORU put the game away with three runs in the bottom of the eighth. Cam Schiller knocked in a run with a single and Brett Sowers doubled home a pair to make it 7-1.
IPFW scored a two-out run in the top of the ninth for the final margin.
Martony picked up the win for the Golden Eagles, allowing one run on three hits and a walk in three innings. Martony relieved starter Mark Guest, who was on a pitch count as he continues his comeback from injury.
Jason Stacy picked up his first career save by pitching the final two innings and striking out four.
Baligod and King led ORU at the plate. Baligod was 2-for-3, scored three runs and stole a pair of bases while King went 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI. Williams also had a pair of hits.
