TULSA, Okla.-Having already clinched the Summit League Regular Season Championship, and number one seed in the upcoming conference tournament, the ORU men's basketball team still has plenty on the line Saturday, as they travel to Cedar City, Utah to close out the regular season against Southern Utah. The game will tip off at 8:30 p.m. central time from Centrum Arena.
At 25-5 and 16-1 in the Summit League, ORU can set a school record with its 17th conference victory with a win on Saturday, and can top the 25 win mark for just the fifth time in school history, the second time in the regular season as an NCAA Division I program (1969-70). Additionally, the Golden Eagles need to win to keep their current 18-game winning streak over the Thunderbirds intact.
Saturday's game will be broadcast live in the Tulsa area on KYAL-FM 97.1. Free audio, will be made available through www.ORUGoldenEagles.com. Live video will be available through www.SUUTbirds.com via their subscription service.
These two teams meet in the final game of the regular season after also serving as the conference opener for both teams back on December 3. ORU won that game 61-55 at the Mabee Center making it a 29-8 ORU advantage in the all-time series between the two programs and the 18th win in a row for ORU over the Thunderbirds. The Golden Eagles have not lost to SUU since January 9, 2003 when Southern Utah took the meeting in Cedar City, 73-58.
ORU has had the same starting lineup for 21 straight games, and has only used two starting lineups this season. SUU has had similar consistency with only six players earning starts, and five players having started at least 26 games this year. Jackson Stevenett leads the Thunderbirds in scoring (13.9) and rebounding (5.8) in an offense that scores 65.6 points per game and allows 67.4. Four of the five starters average at least 10 points though, and the starting five accounts for 54.7 points per game, 83.3 percent of the team's total offense.
