ORU Newcomer Velkey to Represent Hungary
“We are thrilled that Krisztina will get another chance to compete at the international level before she joins us at the end of the month,” said ORU Head Coach Misti Cussen. “It’s always a boost when one of our players can represent ORU at the highest levels of the game, and we believe that competing against Europe’s best youth players will prepare Krisztina for her first collegiate season.”
Velkey and Hungary will compete in the nine-team B Division. Hungary’s first game is scheduled for Thursday, August 16 against Israel.
Velkey is the third member of the ORU women’s basketball program to compete internationally in the past year. Rising senior Kevi Luper represented the United States at the 2011 Pan American Games in Mexico, while 2012 graduate Dominique Allen played for Great Britain at the 2012 London Olympics.
Velkey is no stranger to Hungary’s international competition roster. The 5-9 point guard represented her native country at the 2009 FIBA U18 European Championship and last season’s U20 European Championship, where she teamed with rising ORU sophomore Bernadett Balla.
With Velkey running the point, Hungary finished sixth in last season’s competition. Velkey averaged 4.9 points and a team-high 1.3 steals per game.
ORU posted a 20-11 record in 2011-12 and earned their third consecutive WNIT bid. The Golden Eagles open the 2012-13 season on October 27 with an exhibition against Harding.
