PSO Mayor's Cup Battle Opens 2012-13 Season

Oral Roberts was in danger of a second straight exhibition loss before a 19-0 2nd half run helped the Golden Eagles to a 74-54 victory over Oklahoma Baptist on November 3. The Bison took a 46-45 lead with 12:30 left, but the Golden Eagles responded with a 19-0 run to take a 64-46 run with just over seven minutes to play, putting the game out of reach.
Kevi Luper approached a triple-double against OBU with 25 points, eight rebounds and eight steals, and Taylor Cooper recovered from an off night in the Harding exhibition to score 16 points and collect four steals.
Jaci Bigham made her 2012-13 debut and was electric, scoring four points and dishing 12 assists. Bigham was the spark plug during ORU’s crucial 19-0 run, assisting on five of ORU’s nine baskets during the run.
The Golden Hurricane were 13-15 last season, with an 8-8 Conference USA record. Tulsa won just three of 13 games away from home.
Tulsa knocked off Mid-America Christian University on November 4, 83-50, in exhibition action. Taleya Mayberry reeled off 27 points and nine assists to lead the Golden Hurricane over the Evangels, while Tiffani Cousinard tallied 13 points and 15 rebounds.
Mayberry led the Golden Hurricane with 14.7 points per game last season and was a Preseason All-Conference USA selection in 2012-13. As a team, Tulsa was picked to finish 6th in the Preseason Conference USA Women’s Basketball Poll.
ORU is 29-7 all-time against the Golden Hurricane, but Tulsa has won the last two games in the series.
Tulsa won last season’s PSO Mayor’s Cup game at the Reynolds Center, 65-57, on November 29, 2011. ORU led at halftime, 29-24, but shot just 21.2% (7-for-33) in the second half. Luper led the Golden Eagles with 32 points, while Mayberry tallied 18 points to lead Tulsa.
ORU’s last victory in the series was a 74-69 win on December 12, 2009. Luper and Bigham scored 18 points each in the victory, while Mayberry led the Golden Hurricane with 22 points.
ORU has won their last three openers, including an 80-53 win over Drury last season, and they have won their last eight home openers dating back to a 74-71 loss to UT-Arlington on November 25, 2003.
Second-year Tulsa Head Coach Matilda Mossman is 13-15 at Tulsa and has a 160-108 career record in nine seasons. ORU's Misti Cussen makes her official head coaching debut on Friday after spending the last 16 seasons as the club’s top assistant.
The Golden Eagles take a week off after the Mayor’s Cup game before returning to action on Friday, November 16 against UT-Arlington. Tip time in Arlington, Texas is scheduled for 2 pm CT.
