ORU Opens Difficult Stretch at Missouri
Live radio coverage of Wednesday’s game starts at 6:45 pm CT on KYAL-AM 1550 and ORUGoldenEagles.com, while a subscription video broadcast is available at MUTigers.com.
Oral Roberts (1-5) fell in their closest game of the season on Saturday, a 53-51 setback against UALR. The Golden Eagles led by 11 points with 8:30 remaining but could not hold on and lost for the fifth consecutive game.
Dorottya Balla was on fire for ORU, scoring a career-high 14 points, while Christian Key added 13 points and six rebounds. Sarah Shelton also had a career day in defeat, blocking six shots.
Key and Alexus Wilson lead ORU in scoring through six contests, with 10.8 points per game. The mark ranks 27th in the Southland Conference.
Shelton is the team’s leading rebounder, ranking 3rd in the SLC with 9.3 boards per game, and she leads the conference with 2.5 blocks per game.
Missouri is 7-1 after suffering their first loss of the season, 74-68, at Miami (Fla.) on November 30. Morgan Eye hit nine three-pointers in the loss and scored 27 points, while Bri Kulas scored 13 points and snatched 14 rebounds.
Kulas is Missouri’s only double-figures scorer through eight contests, as she averages 16.6 points per game. Point guard Lianna Doty has dished 53 assists while committing just 26 turnovers.
ORU is 0-5 all-time against Missouri, but they have not played the Tigers since February 9, 1995, an 81-59 loss in Columbia. Four of the five games have come in Columbia and the five Missouri victories have come by an average of 23.2 points.
Wednesday’s game is the first of four December road games for Misti Cussen’s club, all of them coming against power conference opponents. ORU will face Northwestern, Marquette and Nebraska to close their non-conference schedule. The four December foes currently sport a combined record of 25-4.
The difficult December swing should boost an ORU schedule that is already shaping up as one of the most difficult non-conference slates in program history. The website RealTimeRPI.com currently ranks ORU’s 2013-14 schedule as the 33rd-toughest in NCAA Division I.
ORU will be off for 12 days before taking on Northwestern. Tipoff in Evanston, Ill., is scheduled for 11 am CT on Monday, December 16.
