Sioux Falls, SD—The #1 seeded Oral Roberts women’s basketball team opened up the postseason in impressive fashion, scoring a 108-79 victory over #8 Western Illinois in the opening round of the Summit League Championships Saturday afternoon in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
Priscila Cergol was the story of the game for ORU, as the freshman guard unleashed for 20 points on 7-10 shooting, while chipping in a game-best seven assists and three steals.
A stingy ORU defense stifled Western Illinois in the early going, forcing 11 first half turnovers and holding the Leathernecks without a field goal for the first six minutes of the opening half.
Holding a 60-32 lead at intermission, the Golden Eagles moved the margin to 30 on a Jordan Pyle three point play with 14:57 showing in the second half. ORU kept running and gunning from that point on, increasing the lead to as many as 42 late in the contest before settling for the 29 point win.
By the time the smoke had cleared, ORU had set a Summit League postseason record with 108 points, topping the previous best of 102 set by Northern Illinois in 1993. The Golden Eagles also set the Summit mark for made field goals with 42.
Luper led all scorers with 28 points, while tacking on a season-best four assists.
Jones posted 15 points, six assists and zero turnovers in the ORU win, with Pyle adding her 19th career double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds.
Valenica Kelly paced Western Illinois with 17 points and three assists.
With the victory, ORU moves to 21-9 on the year, while the Western Illinois season ends with an 8-21 mark. The Golden Eagles will take on the winner of the Oakland vs. Southern Utah contest on Monday at 12:00 p.m. for a chance at their second-straight conference finals appearance.
Notes: The 100+ point game marks a program-best sixth for ORU…is tied for 5th all-time at ORU with 19 career double-doubles…108 points is the most ever scored by ORU in program postseason history.
