ORU (18-9, 12-4 Summit League) escaped with a 62-61 overtime victory on Saturday afternoon at IPFW. The Golden Eagles rallied from a nine-point deficit with 5:35 left in regulation to win their third straight game.
Junior Kevi Luper hit the winning free throws with 11.4 seconds left in the extra period to give ORU a one-point cushion, and IPFW missed a three-point field goal in the game’s final seconds, denying them the upset.
Luper scored 22 points and tacked on four steals in the win. The Adair native set ORU’s career records in both categories in the game, topping Vivian Herron’s scoring record and Kim Ogden’s steals record. The All-American now has 2,206 career points and 374 career steals.
Freshman Bernadett Balla added a big effort against IPFW, with 12 points. Jaci Bigham and Savanna Buck led the Golden Eagles in rebounding, with seven boards each.
Senior Georgia Jones added nine points on Saturday and became the 19th player in ORU history to join the 1,000-point club.
The win clinched the second seed for ORU in the upcoming Summit League Tournament. The Golden Eagles head into Monday mathematically alive in the race for the Summit League regular season crown, although ORU is two games behind South Dakota State with two games left to play.
Jerry Finkbeiner’s club will head into Monday’s game looking for their first two-game road sweep of the conference season. ORU has split each of their prior two-game Summit League road trips this season.
The Golden Eagles have not won back-to-back road games since November, when they won at Wisconsin, North Texas and Houston in succession.
Oakland (11-13, 7-8 Summit League) knocked off Southern Utah on Saturday, 59-45. Bethany Watterworth led the Golden Grizzlies with 20 points, and Brittany Carnago added 19.
ORU beat Oakland, 62-53, on Jan. 21 at the Mabee Center. Luper scored 19 points in the game and topped the 2,000 career point mark.
The Golden Eagles are 21-13 all-time against Oakland.
Only one regular season game remains after Monday’s clash. The Golden Eagles will face last-place Southern Utah on Feb. 25 in Cedar City, Utah. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 pm CT in ORU’s final tune-up before the Summit League Tournament.
