TULSA, Okla. – Head Coach Misti Cussen is proud to announce the 2012-13 Oral Roberts University women’s basketball schedule. Cussen’s first season as head coach is highlighted by a trip to defending NCAA Division I National Champion Baylor, as well as the school’s first trip through the Southland Conference.

“We play an extremely tough non-conference schedule, with the bulk of our early games coming on the road,” said Cussen. “We’ll need to play very good basketball to have success in the non-conference portion of the season, but the upside of those challenges is the preparation we will gain for our first run through the Southland Conference.”

The schedule is difficult indeed for the Golden Eagle club. Including Baylor, ORU will face six teams that qualified for the 2012 NCAA Tournament (Arkansas, UALR, Nebraska, DePaul and McNeese State) and two teams that participated in the 2012 Women’s NIT (Missouri State and Central Arkansas).

The 2012-13 season begins with exhibition action on Saturday, Oct. 27, as the Golden Eagles host Harding University, while the regular season opener is scheduled for Friday, Nov. 9 when arch rival Tulsa invades the Mabee Center.

ORU’s first road trip falls on Friday, Nov. 16, against UT-Arlington. The Golden Eagles last faced UTA in 2010-11, when they took a 110-58 victory.

The highlight of the 2012-13 Mabee Center schedule is set for Monday, Nov. 19, when Cussen’s club hosts SEC opponent Arkansas. Two days later, the Golden Eagles finish a home-and-home series with UALR in Little Rock. ORU topped the reigning Sun Belt Conference champions, 78-63, last season in Tulsa.

The Golden Eagles renew their rivalry with Missouri Valley Conference heavyweight Missouri State on Thursday, Nov. 29 in Springfield, Mo. ORU and the Lady Bears have squared off six times since 2007, with each club taking three wins.

“We always look forward to our annual matchups with Tulsa and Missouri State,” said Cussen. “Having rivalry games like those always adds an extra boost to our early-season schedule.”

The annual TTCU Best Field Trip Ever game is scheduled for Wednesday, Dec. 5, when ORU hosts Evangel at noon CT. Over 4,000 elementary and middle school students filled the Mabee Center for last season’s Field Trip and saw the Golden Eagles take an 80-53 win over Drury.

The toughest test of the season, and the jewel of the non-conference slate, comes on Wednesday, Dec. 12 against the reigning champions from Baylor. Naismith Player of the Year Brittany Griner led the Lady Bears to a 40-0 record last season, the best in the history of women’s college basketball.

Two days after the Baylor test, ORU takes on three-time National Champion Louisiana Tech in Ruston, La. The Golden Eagles topped the Lady Techsters last season at the Mabee Center, 92-71.

ORU’s final pre-Christmas test is scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 20, a road game against Nebraska. The first game out of Christmas break is another test against a power conference foe, when Cussen’s crew heads to Chicago for a Dec. 28 matchup with DePaul.

ORU’s first-ever Southland Conference game is scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 3, as the Golden Eagles face Southeastern Louisiana. After a road game two days later against Nicholls State, ORU returns home for the first time in over a month to face Northwestern State on Jan. 10.

Stephen F. Austin invades the Mabee Center on Jan. 12, completing ORU’s two-game home stand, then it’s back on the road for Cussen’s team as they face Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Jan. 17 and Sam Houston State on Jan. 19.

ORU’s longest home stretch of the season begins on Thursday, Jan. 24 against Lamar. Following the matchup with the Cardinals, ORU will play home games against McNeese State on Jan. 26, Nicholls State on Jan. 31 and Southeastern Louisiana on Feb. 2.

The Golden Eagles are back on the road on Feb. 7, when they take on Northwestern State. Two nights later, ORU completes their brief road swing with a matchup against Stephen F. Austin.

The final scheduled home series of the 2012-13 season begins on Valentine’s Day with a game against Sam Houston State, and a meeting with Texas A&M Corpus-Christi is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 16.

The 2012-13 home finale is scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 19 against Central Arkansas. The Golden Eagles will hold Senior Day festivities prior to the game, where they will honor a senior class that includes two-time All-American Kevi Luper and two-time All-Conference selection Jaci Bigham.

For the second straight year, ORU will close the regular season with three straight road games. The Golden Eagles will wind down the schedule with McNeese State on Feb. 28, Lamar on March 2 and Central Arkansas on March 9.

The 2013 Southland Conference Tournament is scheduled for March 12-16 in Katy, Texas. The Golden Eagles hope to finish in the top-two spots of the SLC regular season standings, which would guarantee them a double-bye in the eight-team tournament.

Overall, ORU will play two exhibitions and 28 regular season games. With the exception of the TTCU Best Field Trip Ever game on Dec. 5, all home non-conference games will begin at 7 pm CT. All home SLC games will begin at 5 pm CT, with the men’s game to follow.

ORU posted a 20-11 record last season and earned their third consecutive bid to the Women’s NIT.
