Velkey Leads Hungary to Promotion, Bronze Medal Finish
The top-three finish earns promotion for Hungary’s U20 team and ensures that they will compete in the A Division of next season’s U20 European Championship.
“We love that Krisztina is already in competition form, and we’re thrilled that she has led Hungary to a very successful European Championship,” said ORU Head Coach Misti Cussen. “Now that the tournament is over, we are excited for Krisztina to be able to join our program, both physically and emotionally.”
Hungary opened the tournament by winning their first five games, and they finished 6-2 overall. Velkey started all eight games for Hungary and played a team-high 30.0 minutes per game. She averaged 8.3 points and 5.1 rebounds per game while leading the Hungarians with 3.0 assists per contest, second-best among all players at the competition.
Velkey scored in double figures three times over the course of the nine-team tournament. She scored 16 points and added seven rebounds in Hungary’s opening 70-64 victory over Israel, on Aug. 16, and she followed that up with 12 points two days later in a 56-55 win over the Czech Republic.
Velkey’s best game came in a 76-71 loss to fellow medal-winner Germany on Aug. 24, when she scored 15 points and dished eight assists. Two days later, she scored eight points as Hungary clinched promotion with a 56-41 win over Belgium
“Krisztina had a fantastic tournament for Hungary and was one of the top point guards at the event,” said ORU assistant coach Bojan Jankovic, who is responsible for the team’s international recruiting efforts. “It’s a huge honor for Hungary to win promotion into the A Division, and Krisztina was an integral part of that success.”
“I think that team chemistry will be one of our strengths this season,” Cussen added. “I anticipate that Krisztina will be a big part of that, and I can’t wait for her to arrive on campus and blend in with our team.”
Velkey opens her collegiate career on Monday, Oct. 29 when ORU hosts Harding in exhibition action.
