FRISCO, Texas - Three-time Summit League Player of the Year Kevi Luper was named to the Preseason All-Southland Conference 2nd Team, which the league released today. As a team, the Golden Eagles were picked 3rd in the SLC’s Preseason SID Poll and 4th in the league’s Preseason Coaches’ Poll.
The Golden Eagles earned a pair of first-place votes out of the 18 possible ballots, both coming from the league’s sports information personnel. Defending SLC Tournament champion McNeese State earned the top spot in the league’s SID and Coaches’ Polls after earning 13 of a possible 18 first-place votes.
Luper is a three-time 1st Team All-Summit League selection, a two-time Associated Press Honorable Mention pick and a 2011-12 Naismith Trophy Watch List honoree. She is the only player in NCAA Division I history to lead the nation in both points and steals in a season, and she enters her senior year with 2,277 career points, second only to Baylor’s Brittney Griner among active players.
Last week, Luper was named Preseason SLC Player of the Year and a Preseason 1st Team Mid-Major All-American by College Sports Madness.
Megan Herbert of Central Arkansas, a two-time SLC Player of the Year, headlined the league’s Preseason All-Conference 1st Team.
In addition to McNeese State, ORU was picked behind Central Arkansas in both polls and Stephen F. Austin in the Coaches’ Poll.
Led by Luper and fellow seniors Jaci Bigham and Savanna Buck, the Golden Eagles were Summit League regular season champions in 2009-10 and 2010-11, and they finished 2nd in the Summit’s regular season standings last year.
First-year Head Coach Misti Cussen leads the Golden Eagles into battle on Monday, October 29, when they host Harding in exhibition action. The 2012-13 regular season schedule begins on Friday, November 9 against Tulsa.
