ORU Hits the Road to Face UT-Arlington

Oral Roberts (1-0) used a 19-2 run spanning the end of the first half and the first five minutes of the second half to knock off Tulsa, 64-53, in the 2012 PSO Mayor’s Cup game on November 9.
The victory gave new Head Coach Misti Cussen a victory in her debut game leading the Golden Eagles.
Kevi Luper dominated the stat sheet for the Golden Eagles and led the squad with 23 points. She went 10-for-20 from the floor and added six rebounds, three assists, three blocked shots and two steals.
Freshman Taylor Cooper shot lights out from downtown, going 5-for-7 from three-point range and scoring 19 points in her regular season collegiate debut.
Oral Roberts clamped down defensively in the win, holding Tulsa to just 33.9% (19-for-56) shooting for the game. The defensive effort was especially strong in the second half, when the Golden Hurricane were just 8-for-32 (25.0%) from the floor.
Luper was named Southland Conference Player of the Week for her performance. The weekly honor is her first with the SLC and her 15th overall, coming on the heels of a record 14 Summit League Player of the Week titles.
UTA (0-2) played two difficult road games to open the 2012-13 season and lost them both. The Mavericks fell to George Washington, 80-47, on November 9 and Michigan State, 83-39, on November 11.
Malaika Green is the only Maverick to score in double-figures this season, with 12 points against Michigan State, and she leads UTA with 10.0 points per game through one week. Junior Aron Garcia grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds in the loss to George Washington and averages 8.5 rebounds per game through two contests.
UTA was successful in an exhibition game, a 65-53 win over Wayland Baptist on October 29. Desherra Nwanguma had a monster performance in the win, with 16 points and 18 rebounds.
The Mavericks were picked last out of 10 teams in both the WAC Preseason Coaches’ and Media Polls after finishing 7-21 last year with a 5-11 conference record.
UTA Head Coach Samantha Morrow is in her 6th season at the school, with a 71-80 career record. Cussen is 1-0 in her ORU head coaching career.
ORU is 5-4 all-time against UT-Arlington. The Golden Eagles snapped a four-game losing streak to UTA in their last meeting, a 110-58 romp at the Mabee Center on November 12, 2010. Luper scored 28 points in the victory, while Jaci Bigham added 15 points and six assists.
The Mavericks feature four players on their 2012-13 roster who played in the 2010 contest. Of those four players, Hailee Rhymes led the team with five points and five rebounds at the Mabee Center.
ORU has won their last three games in the state of Texas: November 22, 2011 against Houston (76-60), November 16, 2011 against North Texas (70-60) and March 17, 2011 against TCU (78-74).
The Golden Eagles return to the Mabee Center on Monday, November 19, when they host the University of Arkansas. Game time is set for 7 pm CT.
