ORU Battles Stephen F. Austin to Close Home Stand

Oral Roberts (5-8, 2-1 SLC) led by double-digits for the game’s final 14:48 and earned a Southland Conference victory over Northwestern State, 66-55, on Thursday night at the Mabee Center. The Golden Eagles led by just two points at the halftime whistle but took control of the game with an 11-0 run early in the second half.
Freshman Taylor Cooper went 6-for-12 from the floor and 4-for-8 from three point range to tally 16 points for the second consecutive game, while senior Kevi Luper added 16 points and three steals.
Senior Jaci Bigham scored just two points but led the team with seven rebounds and 10 assists. Bigham has crossed the 10-assist mark in three straight games, a first for the McAlester native.
Center Sarah Shelton scored in double-figures for the third straight game, adding 11 points. The Ft. Worth, Texas native also added three assists, all in the second half, after recording just one total assist in the first 12 games of the season.
Junior Christian Key was hot from downtown, connecting on 3-of-5 three-point field goals and scoring 15 points. The 15-point effort was a career high for Key against NCAA Division I competition.
The victory is the first for the Golden Eagles over Northwestern State after falling to the Lady Demons in 1992 and 1994.
Stephen F. Austin is 6-9 (1-3 SLC) after falling to Central Arkansas, 57-54, on Thursday night. SFA fell behind by as many at 19 points in the 1st half, then came back to take a 53-47 lead with 5:29 left in the game. But UCA outscored the Ladyjacks, 10-1, over the final five minutes of the game.
Senior center Porsha Roberts is the lone SFA player averaging double-figures, at 12.4 points per game. Forwards Daylyn Harris and Annette Davis each scored 15 points to pace SFA in Thursday’s loss.
SFA’s lone conference victory was a 66-47 win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on January 7. The Ladyjacks are 2-5 on the road.
Ladyjack Head Coach Brandon Schneider is 41-37 in his third season at Stephen F. Austin and 344-109 in 14-plus seasons overall.
ORU's Misti Cussen is 5-8 in her first season.
Oral Roberts is 1-1 all-time against Stephen F. Austin, but the two sides have not squared off since the 1985-86 season. ORU knocked off the Ladyjacks on December 15, 1984 by a 70-68 count, while Stephen F. Austin returned the favor with a 69-64 win over December 14, 1985. Both meetings took place in Dallas.
The Golden Eagles hit the road on Thursday, January 17, when they face Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Game time is set for 5 pm CT.
