LAWRENCE, Kan. - A disjointed game went the way of the home team on Sunday afternoon as Oral Roberts University fell to Kansas, 84-62, in front of 1,477 spectators at Allen Fieldhouse. With the loss, ORU falls to 1-1 on the young season.

Both teams were in early-season form on Sunday in a game that featured plenty of stoppages. ORU and Kansas combined for 38 turnovers and 58 fouls, and their combined three-point shooting mark was 4-for-26 (15.4%).

Still, several individuals shone brightly for the Golden Eagles, with Kaylan Mayberry scoring a team-high 17 points. Christian Key added 13 points, all in the second half, and Alexus Wilson came off the bench to score 12 points for the second straight game.

As a team, ORU was 22-for-71 (31.0%) from the floor and 3-for-16 (18.8%) from three-point territory. They committed 33 fouls and hit just 15-of-27 (55.6%) from the free throw stripe.

Two players tallied double-doubles for Kansas (1-0), led by Chelsea Gardner’s 24 points and 13 rebounds. Asia Boyd finished with 17 points and 10 boards, while Natalie Knight chipped in 12 points.

Kansas attempted 54 free throws and hit 41 (75.9%), setting single-game program records in both categories.

The Jayhawks struggled mightily from three-point range, going 1-for-10 (10.0%), and they turned the ball over 22 times.

ORU struggled out of the gate, falling behind 7-0 before Atoe’ Jackson scored the team’s first points at the 14:03 mark of the 1st half. The Golden Eagles got their first points from a starter at the 4:10 mark, when a Mayberry runner cut the gap to 20-14.

KU was able to pull away late in the half, leading by as many as 14 points in the period. But ORU scored the final four points of the frame to trail 31-21 at the intermission.

The Golden Eagles shot just 20.6% in the 1st half, but defensively they clamped down to hold Kansas to a 30.0% mark.

Kansas came out of the locker room strong, opening the 2nd half on a 17-3 run to put the game out of reach. A layup by Gardner on a post-to-post connection from Bunny Williams stretched the advantage to 48-24 with 13:37 left.

ORU played fairly even with Kansas for the remainder of the game, even cutting the gap to 56-40 on a Mayberry steal-and-score with 9:22 left, but they could never get closer than 16 points.

Kansas is now 12-0 all-time against ORU.

Three Golden Eagles fouled out of the game, with Noora Jaervikangas, Tysia Manuel and Jenni Bryan all sitting down in the final five minutes. ORU had not had three disqualifications in one game since a 2009 contest against Baylor.

Sarah Shelton led the Golden Eagles with eight rebounds in the game, while Key had a team-high three assists and Mayberry picked three steals.

ORU will face a second straight power conference opponent on Wednesday, November 13, when they take on Arkansas. Game time in Fayetteville, Ark., is scheduled for 7 pm CT.
