ORU Faces #18/15 Nebraska in Final SLC Tuneup
ORU (1-8) last played on December 18, a 79-71 overtime loss at Marquette. The Golden Eagles built a 14-point 1st half lead against the heavily-favored BIG EAST club before seeing the home side surge ahead by 13 points with 3:48 left in the 2nd half. But ORU ended the 2nd half on a 14-1 run to force the extra period, where they were outscored, 15-7.
Christian Key sent the game to overtime with a game-tying jumper six seconds before the buzzer, and she finished the game with 19 points. Dorottya Balla also put in 19 points, setting a career scoring high for the fourth time in ORU’s last five games.
Key ranks 19th in the Southland Conference in scoring, with 12.0 points per game, while Sarah Shelton ranks 5th in the conference with 8.7 rebounds per game.
Nebraska enters the game with a 9-2 mark after dispatching of Summit League member South Dakota, 87-53, on December 21 in Lincoln. All-American candidate Jordan Hooper led the Cornhuskers with 19 points and seven rebounds in the win.
Hooper leads Nebraska with 19.8 points and 10.8 rebounds per game through 11 contests. Emily Cady ranks second on the team, with 13.3 points and 9.0 rebounds per game, and Rachel Theriot averages 11.0 points per game
ORU is 0-5 all-time against Nebraska and fell to the Huskers, 80-67, on December 20, 2012. Hooper scored 33 points in the game, while Bernadett Balla led current Golden Eagles with 17.
A win over the Huskers would be ORU’s first victory over a current Big Ten Conference member since November 13, 2011, an 80-63 triumph over Wisconsin. ORU is 2-10 all-time against current Big Ten members.
