Golden Eagles Host Islanders on Saturday

Oral Roberts (2-9, 1-0 SLC) was an 85-73 winner over Houston Baptist on Thursday night. Freshman Dorottya Balla led the way with a career-high 30 points, while fellow rookie Noora Jaervikangas also had a career night with 15 points and eight rebounds. The freshman duo combined for 23 points in the game’s final 12 minutes to lift ORU from a four-point deficit.
Veterans were also vital to Thursday’s win. Christian Key scored 18 points and dished a career-high six assists, while Sarah Shelton grabbed 14 rebounds and blocked five shots.
Key continues to lead the team in scoring, with 13.7 points per game, a mark that ranks 11th in the Southland Conference. Shelton averages 9.0 rebounds per game, 4th in the league, while Balla now ranks 26th overall and 5th among SLC freshmen with 11.0 points per game.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi enters Saturday’s game 7-5, with an 0-1 Southland Conference record. The Islanders fell in their conference opener, 66-62, on Thursday at Central Arkansas. Jasmine Shaw led the Islanders with 13 points in the loss to UCA, while Kassie Jones scored 12 points off the bench.
Shaw is AMCC’s top scorer through 12 games, with 16.3 points per game, and she is shooting 42.1% from three-point range.
The Islanders entered the week with an RPI of 242, and they have played the 325th-most difficult schedule in the nation according to RealTimeRPI.com.
ORU is 3-1 all-time against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, and they swept the Islanders last season. The Golden Eagles won the most recent meeting, 81-59 on February 16, 2013 at the Mabee Center. Among current Golden Eagles, Shelton led the way with 16 points.
