Oral Roberts (3-10, 2-1 Southland Conference) held off Central Arkansas, 70-60, on January 11 at the Mabee Center. Dorottya Balla and Alexus Wilson led ORU with 13 points each in the win, while Bernadett Balla scored 10 points and pulled in nine rebounds.
The victory was ORU’s seventh straight over UCA and keeps ORU in the top four of the Southland Conference standings. The Golden Eagles are 2-1 through four rotations of league play, and they trail league leader Stephen F. Austin (4-0) by a game and a half.
Senior Christian Key scored eight points in the UCA win, and she continues to lead ORU with 12.6 points per game, a mark that ranks 17th in the SLC. The Tulsa native is also ranked 13th in the league in assists per game, at 3.2 per game.
Dorottya Balla has led ORU in conference play on the strength of a 30-point explosion against Houston Baptist in the league opener. Balla ranks 4th in the SLC with 18.0 points per game in conference action.
Abilene Christian is 11-6 on the season after a forfeit victory over Southeastern Louisiana on January 11. The Wildcats last competed on January 9, an 88-44 victory over New Orleans. Six of ACU’s 11 wins have come against non-NCAA Division I members.
ACU is a first-year transitional member of NCAA Division I. As such, Thursday’s game will not count toward ORU’s RPI and does not count as a Division I game; however, the game will count toward the Southland Conference standings.
Renata Marquez leads ACU with 13.4 points per game, while Whitney West averages 13.0 points. Five of ACU’s top seven contributors are freshmen, including top rebounder Suzzy Dimba (7.6 rebounds per game).
ORU has never before faced off with Abilene Christian, although the Golden Eagles have won 30 straight regular season games against non-NCAA Division I members.
ORU stays in Texas following Thursday's game, and they will bus to San Antonio for their next tilt, against transitional SLC member Incarnate Word. Tip time against the Cardinals is scheduled for 2 pm CT on Saturday, January 18.
