Women’s Soccer Carries Expectations, Excitement Into Camp
TULSA, Okla. – The 2013 Oral Roberts women’s soccer team kicked off its preseason training schedule early Wednesday morning as they enter the upcoming season with high expectations. The Golden Eagles will begin play on August 17 when they host in-state rival Oklahoma State in exhibition action.
“Several of the kids have been talking and thinking about this morning since last November when they were eliminated from the (Southland) semifinals,” said first-year head coach Roger Bush. “They are all very excited, the returners are excited and they worked hard in the offseason.”
Bush said the disappointment of falling two wins short of the conference tournament title is “motivating every step of the way.”
“For all the kids that have been in the program,” said Bush, “they want to get to the NCAA Tournament, which is a definite goal, and we think it is within reach.”
Bush was named the Golden Eagle Head Coach in May when his brother, Ryan, was appointed the Head Coach of the ORU men’s program. Roger previously served as a volunteer assistant under his brother, while also leading his high school alma mater’s varsity girls soccer team at Charles Page High School in Sand Springs, Okla.
Among the newcomers Depaul transfer Kaily Cox, who was also a local star at Jenks High School during her prep career, as well as ten freshmen. ORU returns two All-Southland selections from a year ago in first team member Jennifer Abernathy and second team selection Megan Giles.
“We are very excited about each of the newcomers,” said Bush. “They all seem like they are going to fit in and interact great with the team.”
The ORU regular season kicks off at Missouri State on August 23, and the team’s home opener at the Case Soccer Complex is set against former Summit League rival Kansas City on August 30.
