TULSA, Okla. – Fresh off its most dominating performance this season, the Oral Roberts University women’s soccer team will look for its second victory in as many matches when they host on Rogers State on Wednesday. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Case Soccer Complex.
On Sunday, Jennifer Abernathy and Kayla Keller spurred the ORU (3-1) offense to a 6-1 victory over Southwestern Oklahoma State. Both players put in a pair of goals, while Abernathy added three assists as well. Abernathy’s seven points in a match is the most by a Golden Eagle since Jessica Kellogg recorded eight in 2005.
A victory over the Hillcats on Wednesday will establish the best five-game start by a Golden Eagle squad since they began the 2004 season 4-1.
RSU begins its season on Tuesday with a match against Southern Nazarene. The Hillcats return 14 letter winners from last season’s 12-3-3 team, including Taylor Hallford, who led the squad with eight goals and four assists.
Junior defender Tara Garrett was honored as the anchor of an RSU backline that allowed less than one goal per contest last season. For her work, Garrett was named to the All-Sooner Athletic Conference First Team, while Hallford and goalkeeper Jordan Harris received Second Team accolades.
Wednesday marks the third contest in three seasons between ORU and Rogers State with the Golden Eagles taking the first two, 2-0. Megan Giles and Keller put in goals for ORU last season with Ashley Martin picking up assists on each goal.
