Eight Golden Eagles score goals 8-0 win over RSU
TULSA, Okla. – Eight different Oral Roberts University women’s soccer players netted goals on Wednesday night, as the Golden Eagles rolled over Rogers State, 8-0.
The victory clinched the best start for the program since the 2004 season as ORU moved its record to 4-1, while the Hillcats dropped to 0-2.
ORU started the scoring off quickly in the 2nd minute of action as Megan Giles collected the ball inside the final third of the field, dribbled into the box and took the shot from 10 yards out for her third goal of the season.
In the 7th minute, Jennifer Abernathy put in her third goal in consecutive matches as Ashley Martin perfectly placed a free kick in the center of the box which was headed in by Abernathy. Just over a minute later, Kayla Keller dribbled in and scored an unassisted goal to make it 3-0 less than 10 minutes into the match.
Abernathy got into the action again in the 19th minute, this time with an assist as she sent the ball along the end-line from the left side for a waiting Mary-Kate Halsmer who put a head on the ball for the goal. It was Halsmer’s second goal, matching last season’s total, and it was Abernathy’s fifth assist.
With four goals and five assists this season, Abernathy has matched her totals from 2012.
The Golden Eagles had their first opportunity at a penalty kick this season in the 33rd minute as Madison Valenzuela was fouled just inside the outer right corner of the penalty area. The redshirt freshman took full advantage of the situation, putting in the PK for her first collegiate goal, expanding the ORU lead to 5-0.
In the second half, three more freshmen recorded their first collegiate goals.
Seven and a half minutes later, Hannah Briggs collected a Megan Guico cross along the end-line and put it in for the seventh goal of the evening. Finally, in the 80th minute, Kirstie Wilburn found Maria Stordahl on a through ball in a breakaway for the final goal of the night.
The assists by Guico and Wilburn were career firsts by each freshman.
Jordan Harris was credited with the loss for the Hillcats. She recorded seven saves in 74 minutes of action, while Teri Cocke replaced Harris and pulled in four saves in 16 minutes.
The Golden Eagles outshot the visiting Hillcats, 36-1. Of the shot total, 20 were on target for ORU with Abernathy and Amber Mitchell leading the way with three. Giles, Valenzuela and Lyman each put two shots on goal.
Blair Thomas had the lone shot on goal for the Hillcats.
ORU looks to continue its momentum on Friday as the Golden Eagles return to Norman, Okla., for a showdown with Oklahoma. Last season, the Golden Eagles got a goal in the 67th minute by Giles to beat the Sooners. Kickoff for the match is scheduled for 7 p.m., and will be broadcast on Fox Sports Oklahoma and Fox College Sports.
