TULSA, Okla. – The Oral Roberts University women’s soccer team had several opportunities late in the match, but couldn’t put the ball in the net as the Golden Eagles dropped a first place battle to Southeastern Louisiana on Sunday, 1-0.
ORU (10-4-0, 5-2-0) and SLU (11-3-1, 6-1-0) entered the match in a three-way tie for first in the Southland Conference with Stephen F. Austin, who was idle on Sunday. With the loss, the Golden Eagles slip back to third in the standings, a half game behind SFA.
Following an evenly matched game through the first 45 minutes of play, the Lions jumped on the board early in the second half. Kelsey Salcido, one of the top forwards in the Southland, controlled a loose ball that deflected off an ORU defender in the box, placing it in the back of the net. Kayla Vera and Katie Noonan each picked up assists on the goal.
Despite the loss, the Golden Eagles controlled the ball much of the second half, outshooting the Lions 12-4 in the final 45 minutes.
In the 69th minute, ORU looked as if it was going to get on the board as Jennifer Abernathy had a shot get away from the SLU keeper Hope Sabadash. However, a Lion defender was able to clear the ball just before it crossed the line into the goal.
In the 87th minute, Abernathy again had a great attempt to tie the match with a shot from about 25 yards out that hit the cross bar. Abernathy led the Golden Eagles with three shots on goal, while Megan Giles added two and Kayla Keller had one on target.
Maddie Rhodes (6-3) took the loss between the posts as she recorded five saves, while Sabadash (11-2-1) earned five saves in the victory.
ORU will look to get back on track on Friday as they head to Houston Baptist for a SLC contest, followed by a date at Sam Houston State next Sunday.
