ORU to face SLU in tournament semifinals on Friday
TULSA, Okla. – Following a record-breaking regular season, the Oral Roberts University women’s soccer team is set to face Southeastern Louisiana in the Southland Conference Tournament semifinals. Kickoff in Lake Charles, La., is set for 4:30 p.m. on Friday, November 8.
ORU (15-4) received a first round bye in the tournament by finishing the regular season in second place, just a point behind regular season champion Stephen F. Austin. The Golden Eagles reached the semifinals of the tournament last season, but fell to SFA to end its season.
SLU (14-3-3), the third seed in the tournament, won the opening game of the event on Thursday as they topped Central Arkansas, 4-1. Kayla Vera had a big day for the Lady Lions, scoring a goal and adding two assists.
Friday’s matchup with the Lady Lions will feature 11 All-Conference selections, including first teamers Jennifer Abernathy and Kaily Cox for ORU, and Kelsey Salcido, Chelsea Villaescusa and Hope Sabadash for SLU.
Cox highlighted the postseason awards for the Golden Eagles as the Newcomer of the Year, while Sabadash was named the Freshman of the Year.
The Golden Eagles and Lady Lions are two of the top defensive teams in the conference. In league play, each team only allowed seven goals. ORU is on pace for the fewest goals allowed in a season as opponents have only scored 16 goals against the Golden Eagles.
SLU handed ORU one of its two conference losses back on Oct. 13 at the Case Soccer Complex, 1-0. Salcido scored the lone goal in the 50th minute, following a deflected shot off the foot of Vera.
First year Head Coach Roger Bush’s team hasn’t been on the losing end since the regular season showdown with SLU, winning the final five matches of the season. It’s the longest Golden Eagle winning streak since 2003.
The winner between ORU and SLU will advance to Sunday’s championship match at 1:05 p.m. on ESPN3.
