JONESBORO, Ark.-Freshman Mary-Kate Halsmer scored the game-winning goal with just over a minute left in the game to lead Oral Roberts to a 3-2 win over Arkansas State, Friday at ASU Soccer Complex.
Halsmer's goal not only came in the 89th minute (88:57), it also came less than a minute after Arkansas State (4-2-1) tied the game. Halsmer scored after a shot bounced off ASU goalkeeper Susan Brown.
ORU (4-3-0) led 2-0 at halftime after goals by freshman Jennifer Abernathy (20:31) and freshman Whitney Brannan (21:50). Abernathy's goal was unassisted while Maria Grados had the assist for Brannan's tally.
Arkansas State got on the board in the 51st minute on a goal by Michele Clark, and briefly tied the game when Kara Nitti found the back of the net at 88:00.
ORU keeper Amanda Wheeler made five saves to earn the victory. Arkansas State got off 15 shots, while ORU had 14.
The Golden Eagles return to action when they host Mississippi State, 1 p.m., Sunday at ORU Soccer Complex.
