Trailing 1-0 at halftime, the Golden Eagles (7-4-1 overall, 2-0-1 Summit) came alive in the second half, out-shooting the Mastodons (5-7-0, 2-2-0) by an 11-3 count in the final 45 minutes of play.
Freshman Jordan Parsons tied the match in the 52nd minute when she scored an unassisted goal from 5-yards out.
With the game tied 1-1, Abernathy went to work. After junior Maria Grados stole a pass on the right sideline she passed to Abernathy, who launched a 25-yard bomb past IPFW goalkeeper Erin Nayler for a 2-1 ORU advantage in the 59th minute.
Abernathy gave the Golden Eagles some breathing room just over a minute later. Freshman Mary-Kate Halsmer fed Abernathy from the left side and Abernathy punched a shot past Nayler again for a 3-1 lead.
IPFW opened the scoring when Lisa Underwood grabbed an errant shot near the right end line, turned and knocked a shot beyond the reach of ORU keeper Amanda Wheeler in the seventh minute.
Wheeler faced nine shots overall and made three saves in helping ORU secure the win. Nayler faced 17 total shots from the Golden Eagles, making six saves.
