Women's Soccer Drops OT Heartbreaker at Western Illinois, 3-2

MACOMB, Ill.-Oral Roberts suffered a 3-2 overtime loss in a key Summit League meeting at Western Illinois on Friday.

Western's Ali Smyth scored the game winner five minutes into overtime when she collected a rebounded shot in front of the goal and fired past ORU keeper Amanda Wheeler. Until Smyth's goal, neither team scored in span of more than 60 minutes.

The Westerwinds (7-4-4, 3-1-1) opened the scoring when Jordan Spaciel found the back of the net in the third minute. Western took a 2-0 lead less than four minutes later on a goal by Kelly Diershow.

ORU received some assistance from the Westerwinds when WIU scored an own-goal in the 27th minute. Anna Bickers tied the game at 2-2 with an unassisted goal in the 33rd minute.

Wheeler made five saves in goal for the Golden Eagles, and Western Illinois goalkeeper Laura Atkinson stopped four shots.

The Golden Eagles return to action when they visit IUPUI, 1 p.m., Sunday in Indianapolis, Ind.
